Governance
Since bringing BC’s four nursing designations together in 2018, NNPBC has continued to evolve as a unified professional association. Our original governance model created a shared structure for RNs, LPNs, RPNs and NPs. In 2025, we built on that foundation to make the organization more responsive, strengthen member participation and support more effective advocacy.
Today’s governance approach is ultimately about making NNPBC better able to serve the profession: supporting nurses in their work and ensuring nursing perspectives are part of the decisions shaping health care in BC.
Governance and why it matters
Governance is the system that shapes how a non-profit is run at the highest level. At NNPBC, it includes our volunteer board of directors who guide the organization and make sure it stays true to its purpose. Governance plays a critical role in:
- Setting strategic direction for the organization
- Ensuring accountability and transparency, including around how member dollars are used
- Providing leadership and oversight to support the CEO and strengthen NNPBC’s impact
Good governance ensures that NNPBC is accountable to its mission to support and advocate for all nurses and nurse practitioners in BC.
Our governance structure
A nurse-majority, skills-based board of directors that includes nurses and nurse practitioners from all four nursing designations, as well as those with expertise and experience in non-profit governance.
Governance committees composed of board and non-board members, focused on organizational governance issues like finance, strategic planning, governance and more.
Nurse Practitioner Leadership Committee (replacing the previous NP Council), a committee of the board that advises and engages on NP advocacy issues.
NNPBC members elect our board or directors and on any changes to NNPBC’s bylaws. Voting membership is for BCCNM-licensed nurses and nurse practitioners, while Non-Voting membership includes students, retired nurses, and internationally educated nurses pursuing licensure in BC.
2025-26 Board of Directors
The board of directors guides NNPBC’s mandate and vision. As the governing body, the board provides oversight of the organization’s operations and ensures alignment with its strategic direction. A full description of the Board’s responsibilities is outlined in NNPBC’s bylaws.

Our bylaws
NNPBC’s bylaws are the rules that set out how the association is governed. They define things like who can be a member, how members participate in decisions, how the board is structured and elected, and how meetings and voting work.
They matter because they create the formal framework for how NNPBC is accountable to its members and how authority is shared between members and the board. They also protect important parts of our governance, including representation of all four nursing designations and members’ rights to vote on key decisions.
Our bylaws operate under BC’s Societies Act and can only be changed through a special resolution of members.
