The May 2025 NPS Newsletter features a conversation among nursing leaders in British Columbia about the theme “The Power of Nurses to Transform Health.”
The discussion highlights how nurses are driving positive change across the health care system through patient care, education, research, leadership, advocacy and policy development. Examples of this transformation include expanded nursing roles in diagnosing and treating opioid use disorder, efforts to improve staffing and nurse-to-patient ratios, and ongoing work to advance health equity and address Indigenous-specific racism.
The leaders also emphasize the wide range of career opportunities within nursing, the profession’s trusted role in society and the meaningful impact nurses have on individuals and communities. While acknowledging challenges such as heavy workloads, staffing shortages and burnout, they stress the importance of supporting one another, advocating for better working conditions, prioritizing wellness and using the collective voice of nurses to strengthen and improve health care in British Columbia.
