Certified Registered Nurses & Registered Psychiatric Nurses

What is certification?

Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs) who are certified by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) are allowed to perform certain restricted activities within their autonomous scope of practice.

Decision Support Tools (DSTs) set out the activities that are included in the certified practice guidelines provided by BCCNM.

There are five certified practice areas including RN First Call, Remote Nursing, Reproductive Health (Contraceptive Management), Reproductive Health (Sexually Transmitted Infections), and Opioid-Use Disorder.

Our role

NNPBC is responsible for maintaining the DSTs for three certified practice areas: RN First Call, Remote Nursing and Reproductive Health (Contraceptive Management). We also maintain the competencies for all certified practice areas.

DSTs are regularly reviewed and monitored based on best practices. The information provided is considered current. Certified nurses are responsible for following the most current DSTs.
